Leighanne stood staring wide eyed at the confession Hunter had just made. "Please, Leigh," he said softly. "I know I'm not perfect. Hell, no one is perfect. I did some pretty fucked up shit to you and I really regret everything I've done."
"Well, that's good," she said finally finding her voice. "Because you cheated on me with my best friend. I'm glad you regret that."
"Leigh," he said sighing loudly. "I never meant for any of this to happen."
"No," she replied. "You never do and if it had been the first time you cheated I might consider forgiving you, but it was just one occasion in a long list of infedelities, Hunter." She forced the tears back. "Why did you bring me here?"
"Because I figured out something while we were apart," he replied. She quirked a brow at him. "I realized that I really do love you." She scoffed. "I know you won't believe me, but I do. All the time I cheated....they were me running away from something I had never really felt before. Leigh, you're the first woman who's truly given me a reason to wake up in the morning. All this time I've been getting by, but you made me truly live." She stared at him awestruck at his confession, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I know no matter how many times I apologize, I can never take back the things I've said and done to you. I caused you so much pain in the past and I don't blame you for being pissed at me. I wish I could take it all back. I wish that I could be the one you come to when you need a shoulder to cry on again, but I know I've fucked that up," he said. Leighanne's tears now streaked her cheeks. "I just wanted you to know that I am going to do all that I can to make you believe how truly sorry I am. I just had to tell you how I feel for you, even if you don't believe me."
They stood staring at each other for a long while. "Why are you doing this to me," she asked with a choked sob. He moved toward her to comfort her and she waved him off. "Haven't you broken my heart enough?"
"I just wanted you to know how I feel," he replied sadly.
"Well, you've done it," she replied. "Now leave."
Hunter hung his head and began to walk away slowly. He glanced over his shoulder at the woman he loved and sighed. "In time I will make you see that you are my reason," he said softly. "You're still in too much pain to see it now, but in time you will see. You're the reason."
