"Dwayne," Emily asked when she saw him sitting on the steps to the gym with his head in his hands. "What's wrong?"
He looked up at her with tears shining in his eyes. "I caught Trish....with Drew. I just...can't believe she would do that to me....and here of all places."
"Oh," Emily said softly.
"I know you never trusted her," he said sniffling and wiping the tears out of his eyes with the heels of his hands. "I guess I was blinded."
"Love does that sometimes," Emily said.
"You must think I'm the biggest fool in the world to have fallen for Trish," he said not looking at her.
"Dwayne, look at me," she said. He raised his eyes to meet hers. "I don't think you're a fool. I could never think that way about you."
He scoffed. "I feel like a fool."
"We all do when we love and get burned," Emily said offering a weak smile.
"Maybe if I had given her more space this wouldn't have happened," he said.
"Dwayne this was not your fault," Emily said wiping away a stray tear. "She's the one who's losing out here. She had a wonderfully loving man and she chose to hurt him. She's crazy." She smiled warmly at him. "Do you want me to come back to the hotel with you? You need to talk? Because I'm here if you need me."
"Thanks," he said smiling sadly. "I think I just want to be alone right now. Emily nodded and watched as Dwayne stood and walked away.
Later that afternoon Emily was lying on her hotel bed looking over her schedule for the week when there was a knock at her door. Dwayne stood there looking down at her sheepishly. "Can I come in? I..uh...didn't want to be alone."
"Of course," Emily said stepping aside so that he could enter. "Come here," she said and pulled him into a tight embrace. "You know you can always count on me to be here for you."
"You're too good to me," he said, his voice muffled by her shoudler, where he had buried his face.
"That's what you do for the people you care about," Emily replied as he pulled away. He looked down into her eyes and realized that she truly did care for him.
"How long have you felt this way about me," he asked softly, not taking his eyes from hers.
"Almost a year now," she replied smiling sheepishly. "I wanted to tell you, but you seemed so happy with Trish. I didn't want to break you up. Now I wish I had." He looked at her quizically. "You wouldn't be going through this heartache if I had," she replied smiling. He returned her smile and leaned down to place soft kiss on her lips.
